Living in Barcelona can be especially hard to stick to your nutrition goals. Why? Because we love to eat out! Eating at home makes it much easier to watch what you’re eating and not get tempted to eat too much of the stuff you don’t need. 

That being said, your social life and nutritious goals both deserve high priority. Health is just as much about doing good as feeling good. So here are some tips on how you can continue to eat healthily and nutritiously whilst out with your friends in Barcelona.

Eat a healthy snack before you go

If you eat something clean and nutritious before you go, it can help limit you from getting carried away with eating too much from the menu.

 

How is it cooked?

Here are some words to look out for on the menu that indicate that the food has been prepared more healthily ‘steamed, grilled, roasted or poached.’ These are usually better than ‘pan-fried, fried, crispy, crunchy or sautéed..’

 

Choose coffee over dessert

Having a coffee rather than dessert is a good way to get a boost similar to the sugar high and can hopefully kick those cravings too.

 

Ask for sauces and dressings on the side

Restaurant sauces and dressings often have a lot of fat, sugar and salt. You can choose how much you add to your meal by asking for it on the side.

 

Go for healthy starter options

Soup, gazpacho or a green salad to start also help to fill you up on the good stuff before you dive into the rest of the food.

 

Pick a healthy restaurant

The easiest and safest way to eat healthy is by going to a place with a healthy menu. That way you can don’t have to think too hard when you’re there about picking the healthy option. Try not to drink with your meal

Drinking liquid disturbs your digestion and essentially flushes away a lot of the nutrients. It’s also much easier to lose sight of your glass of wine when sipping alongside your meal. Although 30 minutes before and after liquid still interrupts digestion, it’s better to drink before or after the food is served. 

 

Tomato or veg-based sauces are usually better than cheesy ones

As you can imagine, vegetable sauces have more nutrients and less fat than cheese sauces

Most importantly, don’t feel guilty. If you are eating out, use that time to enjoy it. Just take these little health tips with you but don’t feel bound by them. Remember, no food is bad food. Variety and feeling good about what you are eating is the best diet you can have. Buen provecho!
