One of the biggest reasons people don't start strength training isn't a lack of motivation.
It's life.
Work gets busy. Travel picks up. The calendar fills. Looking after yourself becomes something you'll "get back to" when things settle down.
The problem is, they rarely do.
John's story is one we think many people will relate to.
At 42 years old, John works in an executive position with a demanding schedule. He travels for work around twice a month, often spending two or three days away at a time. Like many professionals in Barcelona, he was trying to balance a successful career while also wanting to look after his health for the long term.
When John joined ATTIKA in November 2024, he wasn't looking to become an athlete.
He simply wanted to move better and stop his shoulders holding him back.
When John first came to us, he was experiencing pain in both shoulders, with his right shoulder being particularly problematic.
His shoulder mobility was limited, his posture needed improving, and after seeing a physiotherapist he was told that weakness through his back and shoulders was likely contributing to the issue.
This is something we see regularly.
Many people searching for help with shoulder pain or shoulder mobility assume the answer is simply stretching more or avoiding movements that feel uncomfortable.
Often, if a serious injury has been ruled out by a healthcare professional, the missing piece is building strength.
Not just in the shoulder itself, but throughout the muscles that support it.
At ATTIKA, every client starts with a detailed movement assessment before beginning personal training. Understanding how somebody moves allows us to create a programme that meets them where they are, rather than forcing them into exercises they aren't ready for.
John wasn't struggling because he lacked discipline.
He was managing a demanding executive role, regular business travel and all the responsibilities that come with modern life.
The challenge wasn't finding the "perfect" program.
It was finding one that could adapt to his life.
That's exactly how we approach coaching.
Some weeks clients train more.
Some weeks work takes priority.
Some weeks they travel.
Consistency isn't about having perfect conditions.
It's about having a plan that works with your real life, not against it.
One of our favourite parts of John's journey is that he no longer comes to training because of shoulder pain.
Today, he's training for performance.
As his shoulders became stronger, his posture improved and his body became more resilient, his focus shifted.
Now his training is centred around improving his golf swing.
Golf places unique demands on the body.
Generating power through rotation requires strength, mobility, stability and control working together. Rather than just training golf movements, we help John build a stronger, more capable body that transfers naturally onto the course.
It's a great reminder that strength training isn't just about lifting weights.
It's about making the activities you love feel easier and more enjoyable.
John´s current two goals are:
Longevity isn't about trying to live forever.
It's about giving yourself the best chance of continuing to do the things you love for as long as possible.
Whether that's travelling, hiking, picking up your grandchildren, playing golf or simply living without aches and pains, strength training gives your body the capacity to keep saying yes.
People often assume consistency comes from motivation.
For John, it´s how easy he can fit it into his life.
"I love the easiness and accountability that comes from having a schedule and a specific programme to follow with my trainer, so that my only responsibility is to show up and try.
I also love the sense of community and welcoming atmosphere in the gym every day."
Having a trainer removes so much of the mental load.
No wondering what exercises to do.
No second-guessing yourself.
No starting again every Monday.
Just showing up and trusting the process.
Every shoulder is different, which is why a proper assessment always comes first.
If your shoulder pain has been assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional and they certify that strength training is suitable for you, building strength through the back, shoulders and surrounding muscles can improve movement, increase resilience and help you return to the activities you enjoy.
At ATTIKA, we work with many people in Barcelona who want to improve shoulder strength, move with more confidence and build a body that supports them for the long term.
"Remember that everyone who you admire in the gym, or who intimidates you with how strong and fit they are, was at one point a beginner just like you.
Strength training is like planting a tree: the best time to start was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.
No matter your goals or experience level, there's a supportive trainer and a programme that will help you get there faster than you can imagine."
John's story isn't really about shoulders.
And it isn't really about golf.
It's about what becomes possible when you stop waiting for life to slow down before prioritising your health.
You don't need the perfect schedule.
You don't need endless motivation.
You don't even need to know where to start.
You just need a plan that works with your life.
If you're looking for a personal trainer in Barcelona to help you overcome shoulder pain, improve your golf performance, build strength for longevity, or simply feel more confident in your body, we'd love to help you take the first step.
Because every journey is unique.
And no one should walk it alone.
